Football is an aggressive contact sport and properly fitted equipment is absolutely crucial for the safety of the player.  Improperly sized equipment is not only uncomfortable for the player, it can significantly reduce its effectiveness.  Below are some general guidelines and links to fitting information.  To purchase equipment online, visit our Equipment Resource page.  To view what equipment is required, visit our Player Equipment page.
Helmet Sizing Information
General fitting information:
  • The helmet should fit snug on the players head, but should not be overly tight.
  • The helmet should always move as the players head moves.
  • Ear holes should be close to centered on the players ears.
  • The helmet should rest approximately 1 - 1.5 inches above the eyebrows.
  • Jaw pads should touch the face and should follow the contour of the jaw line.
  • Faceguard should be appx. 2 - 2.5 finger widths from the tip of the nose.
Keep in mind that a standard properly sized helmet will fit most players, but not all heads are shaped the same and not all manufacturers fit the same.  If you are unable to find the "right" helmet, customizable helmets are available that utilize interchangeable forehead, jaw, and crown pads, and often air chambers to adjust and mould the helmet to the players head.  Search Equipment Resource page for customizable helmets.

Shoulder Pad Sizing Information
Most shoulder pads are clearly marked with measurements for Shoulder, Chest, and Weight.  Initial fit can be established using any 1 of these 3 measurements.  Chest is measured around the pectoral area with lungs inflated, Shoulder size is determined by extending the arms outward in a "T" and measuring from the crease between the deltoid and trapezius muscles, and Weight is self explanatory.

Once initial fit is made, the following should be checked with pads laced and strapped up:
  • The outside pad caps should extend approximately 1/3 to 1/2 way down the arm with arms in "T" position.
  •  Main shell pads should extend approximately 1 inch beyond the AC joint (shoulder joint) with arms at sides.
  • Clavicle (collar bone) should be covered.
  • There should be 2 - 3 inches of space between shell padding and the neck.
  • Pectoral (chest muscle) area should be covered.
  • Player should be able to raise and lower arms without pad riding into the neck.
Keep in mind that this is a general fitting guide and is applicable to most players.  Just like helmets, there are custom pads made specifically for different position.  Often these specialty pads offer a little less shoulder protection, but increase range of motion and rib protection.  While these are not necessary at the youth level, some players choose to buy these types of custom pads.  Search our resources to find custom shoulder pads.

Mouth Piece Information
On going studies claim that mouthpieces not only protect players from tooth and gum damage, but they also protect against concussion.  Like other safety equipment, improper use or poor fit significantly reduces the effectiveness.  Below are general guidelines on molding a standard mouthpiece.  These instructions can be modified for most mouthpieces, but always check packaging for specific instructions

*Note:  Sertoma rules state that clear mouthpieces are NOT permitted.  This is so that officials can see that players have their mouthpiece in place prior to each play.

Molding your Mouthpiece:
  • Read instructions completely before starting.
  • Lower the portion of the mouthpiece that will fit inside the mouth into boiling water for approximately 30 to 45 seconds.
  • Remove the mouthpiece and immediately dip it into a cup of cold water from the tap for 2-3 seconds.  (Do not use chilled or ice water!)
  • Promptly remove the mouthpiece and quickly place it fully into the mouth on the upper teeth.  It will be hot, but if done properly will not burn you.
  • Once in place, immediately bite down firmly and suck the air and liquid from around the mouthpiece for about 30 seconds.  This will shape the mouthpiece to the gum line and upper teeth. (For additional shaping, push the mouthpiece around the gum line with fingers to help create a tighter fit.
When successful, the mouthpiece comfortably fits in the mouth and doesn't fall down or out when the mouth is open. If the fit feels awkward or uncomfortable, repeat the process.
