The Sertoma Club of Summerville was originally founded on December 1, 1972.  The charter banquet was held at Kings Grant Country Club and was presided over by the original president Mr. W. Rosser Thrash. The Charter Membership included 70 prominent members of the Summerville Community and surrounding area.

Since its beginning, the club has undergone many changes including a name change to the Summerville Sertoma club, but has continued to serve the community in the highest tradition of Service To Mankind.

The key to the club's success has been the manner in which each member has responded in support to many local agencies and to activities in the past 30+ years. Our club provides direct support  to local and national speech and hearing impaired programs; sponsorship of organized youth football; food to the needy; donations to feed the elderly; scholarships for young students and athletes; national heritage contests and awards; and a number of other worthwhile programs.

While Summerville Sertoma continued to operate over the years, another area Sertoma club was formed.  The Azalea Sertoma club was chartered on April 17,1994 and was originally formed as the sponsor for the Azalea Sertoma Cheer Program. Given its roster full of strong and supportive women, they quickly took on many other community service programs also dedicated to the Summerville community. Many of the programs that Azalea Sertoma ran were parallel to those of the Summerville Sertoma club such as Camp Sertoma, a National Heritage Contests, and various scholarships.  This club also supported many other worthy programs like Adopt a Highway, Habitat for Humanity, and Relay for Life to name a few.

In 2010, Summerville Sertoma and Azalea Sertoma board members met and agreed that both clubs would benefit by working together.  Given the parallels in community service, the underlying desire to help the community, and the need to work together on our youth sports programs, both boards agreed that a merge under a single banner should be considered.

After several meetings with individual clubs and between boards, both clubs voted to merge under the original club name, "The Sertoma Club of Summerville".  On March 2, 2010, we held our first meeting as a unified club and are proud to officially announce that we are now One for the Community!!!
